During Your Visit
Checking In:
When you arrive at the lab, you will be asked to sign several forms that allow us to collect data from your child and to use those data in our analyses and publications. Although you (the parent) give us permission to include your child in our research, we leave the final decision to the child. If they are willing to participate they will be asked to sign an assent form that describes the procedures in words that they can understand. The most important thing the form states is that your child can stop participating at any time. All they have to do is tell you or another adult.
While You Wait:
During testing, your child will be accompanied by a research assistant who will answer questions and help as necessary. If you wish, you are welcome to accompany your child through every part of the study. If your child is comfortable to proceed without you, you can relax in the waiting area in the lab. This area was designed to allow you and your other children (if they accompany you) to pass the time comfortably with toys, games, and other activities. Typically, a study lasts 1 to 2 hours but no more than that.
When Your Child Is Finished:
At the end of your visit, your child will be paid for participating in the study. Children are paid $10 to $15 an hour depending on the study. If your child chooses to stop the experiment, he/she will be paid for the time completed. You or your child will be asked to sign a receipt confirming that payment was received.
Hearing Tests:
If your child received a clinical hearing test as part of the study, you may request a copy of those tests for your records, at no charge. We will prepare a short report and mail the results to your home. Although the lab personnel cannot provide ongoing clinical care to your child, the results of your child’s hearing test will be entered into the database housed in the ASU Speech and Hearing Clinic. If you require copies of previous hearing tests conducted in the lab, simply contact the clinic and they will provide you with one.
