FAQs
What Studies are going on now?
Information regarding our current research studies is available at Kids in Research. The information is posted and updated regularly. If your children qualify for one or more studies, you may contact us to for more information and to schedule an appointment. If you would like to be notified when your children quality for a study, you may have your contact information entered into our Reseach Subjects Database. If you have a current hearing test for your child, we will ask to enter that too.
Who do I call about a current study?
Contact information is located on the navigation bar above. Feel free to call the lab director or reseach assistants to obtain information about a study or to schedule an appointment.
How do I find out about future studies?
If you would like to be notified when your children qualify for a study, you may request to have your contact information as well as your child’s most recent hearing test entered into our Research Subjects Database.
What will my child be asked to do?
Most studies include a standard hearing test so that we can adjust the listening conditions appropriately for each child. The experiment may include tasks associated with vocabulary knowledge and development, speech perception, memory games, and listening preference. Before a child is enrolled in a study, the tasks are thoroughly described so that you and your child can make an informed decision about participating.
How long does the testing take?
Most testing takes 1 to 2 hours. Children under 12 are never asked to work for more than 2 hours in any one visit. Occasionally, multiple visits are required for a particular study.
How much will my child be paid?
Children are paid $10 to $15 per hour or part hour depending on the difficulty of the tasks involved. Children are alwayas paid in cash at the end of the session.
May I have a copy of my child’s hearing test?
Yes. You may have the results of any clinical hearing tests performed during the study at no charge. We will prepare a short report and send the test results to your home. Although the lab personnel cannot provide ongoing clinical care to your child, the results of your child’s hearing test will be entered into the database in the ASU Speech and Hearing Clinic. If you require copies of previous hearing tests conducted in the lab, simply contact the clinic and they will provide you with one. A link to the ASU clinic is provided under Helpful Links for Parent at the right.
Who does the testing?
All testing is conducted by research assistants under the supervision of Andrea Pittman, PhD CCC-A. Dr. Pittman is a certified clinical audiologist.
Do you charge for the hearing test?
No. The hearing tests administered as part of a research study are provided at no charge. If your child needs a hearing evaluation but does not qualify for a study, you may schedule an appointment with the pediatric audiologist (Kathy Wexler) in the ASU Speech and Hearing Clinic. The clinic is housed on the second floor of Coor Hall. A link to the ASU clinic is provided under Helpful Links for Parents at the right.
What other services do you provide?
Occasionally, minor problems with hearing aids can be addressed during the course of the study. If a child requires additional clinical services (e.g., a new earmold, hearing aid adjustment or repair) we can recommend pediatric facilities in and around Pheonix that are equipped to address the problem. You are also welcomed to schedule an appointment with the pediatric audiologist (Kathy Wexler) in the ASU Speech and Hearing Clinic. The clinic is housed on the second floor of Coor Hall. Where do we park?
